The Ockel Sirius A combines connectivity and portability in a revolutionary way
Ockel introduces its new Windows 10 device during Showstoppers at IFA. The Ockel Sirius A is a unique little machine that combines the connectivity and functionality you want and need when you are using a personal computer with the portability you expect from today’s technology. By taking a completely different approach to design and technology Ockel developed a groundbreaking, smartphone sized device that forms the missing link between a real Windows 10 desktop experience and a mobile device. The Ockel Sirius A is the third device in the successful Sirius line-up of the Dutch hardware brand and will be crowdfunded on Indiegogo this fall. At least 250.000 dollars are required to bring the project to life.
Ockel integrated an extensive range of connection options into the Sirius A, including 2 USB ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, a Micro SD card slot and a LAN port. “The last 10 years the main focus in the market has been on portability and that often means handing in on options to connect peripherals. Users don’t always want that. We did a lot of market research over the last 18 months and were able to come up with a design that includes an incredible amount of connection options in one single device, without handing in on portability,” explains Tim Haaksma, founder and owner of the hardware brand. The Ockel Sirius A is the size of a large smartphone and is equipped with a 6-inch full HD touchscreen and built-in battery to enable unplugged and on-the-go use. “With the Sirius A we are on a mission to reinvent the PC.”
The Ockel Sirius A runs all x86 compatible Windows programs. The majority of Android, iOS and Windows Mobile devices run on ARM compatible architectures, but this architecture cannot run the same software as laptops or desktop PC’s. And in case you have a mobile device that does run on the x86 compatible architecture, you often have to hand in on the options to connect peripherals. The Ockel Sirius A however doesn’t compromise on the architecture used to make your software run and it doesn’t sacrifice connectivity. “We want to give users a real desktop experience, with the benefits of a mobile device. We see the desktop and mobile market growing towards each other. The Ockel Sirius A is a one of a kind blend of desktop and mobile.”
Last year, the first products in the Ockel Sirius line – the Ockel Sirius B and the Ockel Sirius B Black Cherry – were introduced as crowdfunding concepts and more than 500.000 dollars were raised to develop the two devices. The feedback and learnings from that project, as well as direct support from Microsoft, industry leaders and a new technical partner, inspired Ockel to create the Ockel Sirius A. Just like everything else around the Ockel brand, the name for the Sirius A is derived from space. “The Sirius A is the brightest star in the Earth’s night sky. Sirius B is the ‘little brother’, the white dwarf star. Ockel started small. Compare it to the size of the Sirius B. Now we are ready for the next step. And we want to make it a big one.”
Ockel signed an exclusive partnership agreement with Indiegogo to crowdfund the new concept, that is also officially supported by Microsoft. At least 250.000 dollars are required to bring the project to life. The launch is estimated to take place in September 2016 and early backers can sign up for an exclusive early bird offer here. (Retail) prices and estimated delivery dates are currently unknown.
